  • HIV and AIDS affects our society fundamentally and must be viewed in the context of the socio economic and political environment
  • All people have the right to:
    • privacy
    • an expectation to be treated with dignity and respect
    • participate in the processes of decision making about the issues that affect their lives;
    • access resources and services to live full and healthy lives
    • make their opinions and needs known and have these responded to
  • Communities should be active participants in their own development and all work must take existing community resources, knowledge and experience into account
  • Leadership exists at all levels of society
  • Partnerships and collaboration are critical to addressing the HIV and AIDS pandemic and the general socio economic condition
  • Trusting relationships, built over time, are critical to the success of programme
